Search Tips - KEYWORD Search Engine

Check for spelling

Make sure your search terms are spelled correctly.

Narrowing your search results

Use the ‘Divisions’ criteria to narrow your search. The Division search criteria defaults to search all of the web sites in DENR. However, you can also select a specific Division to search in. Most of the Division names are pretty self-explanatory; however, please note that if you select Administrative Divisions, this includes everything on the DENR home page and Divisions such as Budget, Human Resources and Public Affairs.

To see a complete list of the Administrative Divisions, go to http://www.enr.state.nc.us/html/contact_denr.html

Use multiple words

Using multiple words will return more refined results than a single word. For example, typing "sewage treatment permit application" will return more relevant results than typing just "permit".

Use quotation marks

Use quotation marks to find words that must appear adjacent to each other, for example, "shellfish sanitation". Otherwise, the search results will include the word shellfish and the word sanitation, but not necessarily in that order. The words may appear anywhere, and in any order, within the document.

Use of AND or OR Operators

By default, multiple keywords will use the AND operator, which will require all words to be present in a document. If the reverse is desired, place OR between each word. Parenthesis may also be used to clarify the order of expression evaluation.

Use wildcards

Wildcard searches can expand the number of matches for a particular request. The * character is used as the wildcard character. For instance, searching for wh* will find the words what, why, when, whether, and any other word that starts with wh. Wildcards are only permitted as the last character of a word string.

Search Tips - LITERAL Search Engine

  • The search is based on the exact string you enter, including spaces.
  • Don't use quotation marks.
  • Currently, the only boolean search capability is the AND between the two entry blocks.
  • Don't enter "and," "or", "not" unless you're looking for titles including those words.
  • Entering just part of a word works well if you want to broaden your search. e.g. case stu
will return both case study and case studies.
  • The search is performed on the document titles, call numbers, authors, descriptions and keywords.
  • Author names are entered lastname, firstname. Entering just part of the last name works well.
