Best References: Electroplating (Metal Finishing)

The field of electroplating or metal finishing today is moving away from large manufacturing operations and into smaller job shops. With increasingly strict regulations governing metals in wastewater and increasing costs for disposal of metal-contaminated waste, many metal finishers find that implementing pollution prevention measures such as filtering or treating process water to reduce or eliminate metal contamination and allow water reuse is the best option, both environmentally and economically. Plating processes in this sector include chrome, bright and electroless nickel, zinc, copper, tin, conversion coatings, and more. Information is included on regulations, permits, trade associations, and available and emerging technologies.

Abstract: A process feasibility study was successfully performed on an Atmospheric Evaporator System for the Department of Natural Resources. The study was made to determine the feasibility of a closed-loop rinse system on an electroplating line. Atmospheric evaporation is a process that converts liquid into a vapor and is discharged to the atmosphere. Results indicate that an atmospheric evaporator system successfully reduced head-space in the electroplating tanks sufficient to provide use of the rinse water to replace the evaporated water. Reuse of the rinse water effectively contained constituents of the electroplating bath that are normally discharged to the pretreatment system and subsequently disposed. These favorable results indicate that an adequately designed low-cost atmospheric evaporator system could be utilized to close the loop. The closed loop would eliminate any pretreatment of rinse water and disposal of sludge. Also recovery of the valuable constituents is achieved. Iii

Steel and iron rings are machined, chrome-plated or coated, machined again, cleaned, and shipped to customers. The assessment team's report, detailing findings and recommendations, indicated that wastewater savings would be substantial. By using plastic sleeves instead of masking paint to prevent chrome plating of piston ring inner perimeters, this manufacturer saved $214,000 per year.
